Iberia, the Spanish Airline owned by British Airways, serves very few sub-Saharan cities: Dakar, Lagos, Johannesburg and tiny Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, the only Spanish-speaking African country. Equatorial Guinea has risen to prominence in the last decade as oil has been pumped from under the sea bed off the nation's coasts, which consist of several islands and a slightly larger mainland territory, making the GDP soar. Iberia uses an A319 on the route.
Iberia will be serving Luanda as a new destination this summer.
ReplyDeleteAlso, a "new" airline called Guinea Lineas Aereas has just announced they will lease 757 and 737 from Spanish airline Privilege and start scheduled Madrid-Malabo flights. I have no further information about this airline but I suspect they are the same guys that leased Spanair and Air Europa planes some years ago and that traded under the "Ecuato guineana / Euroguineana" name. I think I will write a short post about them later this month.
