KLM still serves Kano, long after many other international carriers have switched to Abuja or dropped Nigeria service altogether. Similar to SAS's service to Monrovia, KLM seems to have used Zurich as a more southernly origin point for its sub-Saharan service; possibly this was due to aircraft range issues? The four-engined jet rising across the envelope might have not operated optimally in the desert heat, warranting a shorter distance.
